the gift of prayer, time & people

Welcome to 2025! You realize by now that nothing has changed from yesterday except your perspective on life and the decisions you have chosen to make. Here is to remind you that three things will remain constant in the next 365 days: challenges, opportunities, and mysteries. You cannot change any part of these but cooperate with them amidst all the complexity they will present.

I came to remind you of what you already know. This is the truth that God has graciously provided three universal gifts to everyone: Prayer, Time, and People. These gifts hold the key to a meaningful and purposeful life when we understand the purpose of each and plan to use them well.  Let me highlight each below.

DESTINY HELPERS

Praying for and about “Destiny Helpers” have become a major prayer point among believers. It supposes that there is someone who God has appointed to play that role in your life in helping you attain your destiny.

This uncanny disposition by many believers is one of determinism and control, where someone holds the access meant for others and must be prayed into alignment so that they can receive what rightfully is theirs.

While it is true that God will often use and always uses other persons to be a blessing, we must note that it is entirely a divine prerogative. You and I have no power to assume that God has appointed someone to be a “destiny helper”. It is not even consistent with scripture.

The only authoritative statement upon which we build our faith is what Jesus says about who will help us attain our destinies; The Holy Spirit. It is the only personality that carries the nomenclature of “helper”. John 14:16-26,  John 15:26, John 16:13-15.

If you are a part of God’s Kingdom, you already have “The Helper” living in you. It has its assignment properly spelt out and cannot be distracted with other things like human helpers are. It is to guide you into all truth, reveal the mind of your creator, and show you things to come. It will even help you pray accurately Romans 8:26-27.

You can still pray about your human destiny helpers. I’m sure it’s okay. I just want to show you a higher way.

All you need that pertains to life and godliness has already been given to you (1 Peter 1:2-3), so it is best to go on a discovery and find the Help God has released to you. If you ignore that help and search for it outside, you will pierce your heart with many sorrows and disappointments.

So whenever you lift up your heart and eyes in prayer, let your focus be solely on the one who made heaven and earth (Psalms 121:1 and  124:8). Let Him decide how He chooses to help you. Your heart will find true rest in this.

OF A PARTY IN LAGOS AND JESUS

I have been in Lagos for over ten days now and cannot but admire the resilience of the people. Admittedly, a lot of Nigerians are very aware and Lagos is filled with highly educated people who are hopeful of a change given the amount of hard work already imputed into the rusty system. Here, people work very hard in productive labour, despite the fact that there is a lot of disorder that inherently promotes corrupt practices even within glossy financial institutions.  Looking at all the bus drivers, the okada riders, the budding bankers, the street traders, and the mid to senior executives on the streets, you get a sense of an economy on the move. Although it is still very questionable or debatable what exactly our economy produces, if intensity of work spells productivity, then by all means our streets will be soon paved with gold.

Flowing from this, every time I see Lagosians party heavily, I always make an excuse for them in my heart that a lot of the people at these parties work very hard, thereby find consoling such social escapes. Even though such gatherings are spiced with overkill of apparel, music, wine and food, you get a sense of satisfaction in the air of celebration as a reward for diligence to duty. I attended one of such society events a few days ago as an accomplice to grandiose living. I must add that it was due to filial respect and promissory servanthood that I acceded to the demands of socializing. On location at Ahmadu Bello way, we were cramped into a hall that didn’t respect the laws of space economics. The food was good I must admit and was well-organized in terms of distribution. Wine flowed like water and the dancing was without mercy, especially being to the beat of the legendary King Sunny Ade, who is known to jazz his audience with mid-tempo rhythms that spell-binds the hearer into a legal tender spraying frenzy. Interestingly, to add colour to the proceedings, a full representation of the clergy was present in their full regalia and conspicuous emblems of religion. Of course they were escorted to the choicest of seats, closer to the noise ready sound emitters and I asked myself the question if this was a proof of God’s endorsement.
