THE BATHROOM ENCOUNTER – 2

LeadershipSome of the few things I have resolved to do flows from certain guiding principles I had to recall to heart, and they include in the following points. The first is that only those who are committed to actions rather than speeches make great leaders. Like a few friends have counseled me, there is a place for talking, especially as it brings awareness to others and encourages people to switch the light on their consciences and empowers their collective will. However, when there is an opportunity to act, speech should never be the preferred occupation, because in the end, people want to follow him who knows what to do and not what to say. So now I scan my involvements to see where is it I can lead by taking proper action instead of casting my words to the air and hoping that someone somewhere catches it and makes sense of it. THE BATHROOM ENCOUNTER – SEEING WRONG OR DOING RIGHT? THE PERSONAL LEADERSHIP QUESTION

me, myself, and II have decided to sit down and take stock of my life and the direction I would have it go. It’s not that I haven’t always done this, but it’s a necessary step that I must do to continually appraise my progress and evaluate my goals, measure my successes and effect my impact assessment. If someone else told me, I probably would have denied with every ounce of passion in me. But this was classic case of looking into the mirror and not seeing your heroic grandfather’s contrived image, but a direct reflection of me talking back to me through the bathroom mirror. I call it the bathroom encounter. The great thing about such periodic personal encounters is that they become the hallmark for major changes in your life, and a reason to be self motivated in doing the right things. This was one of those moments.

AMNESTY FOR MILITANTS: ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Niger DeltaI just heard that the Nigerian authorities are offering amnesty for the Niger Delta militants as a way of resolving the current crisis that has crippled the region and the productivity of the whole nations as well. The Federal Government is hoping that in two months about ten thousand militants will turn in their weapons and go in for a rehabilitation program in which they will be paid a $433 monthly allowance. After reading on a BBC website, all I could scream out was “are you kidding me?” Is this the last desperate effort of a government that has run out of ideas on how to deal with a situation that they have allowed to become more complicated? I had written a piece some months ago on why I think this conflict could as well result in a civil war if not managed properly. I guess now that these militant are having the ‘liver’ to go as far as the Atlas Cove in Lagos to cause havoc, it is becoming clear the magnitude of threat which their continued existence poses to the security of the nation. In any case, I have a few things to say about this.
